The Building an NHS Fit for the Future mission recognises that the NHS of the past and of today is not fit-for-purpose for providing the service that is needed for tomorrow. As our population demographics and life expectancy changes, so do the needs health challenges faced. Our health service needs to shift its focus from treatment to prevention, adapt to the address the changing prevalence of terminal illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, recognise the value of wellbeing, and integrate with social care to help people live longer, healthier lives.

The Government wants to move to a model where services are delivered in the local community and where cutting-edge technologies are utilised to accelerate diagnosis and treatment. In the North of England, where the extent of health inequalities have already been evidenced and analysed over a number of years, the N8 universities are already undertaking research and developing innovative solutions to address these challenges. This includes harnessing the power of data and AI, working with communities to enhance wellbeing and support an ageing population, and developing new treatments through collaborations with industrial partners.
